Malaysia is stepping up to lead a coordinated ASEAN response to the new U.S. tariffs, with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim emphasizing the need for regional unity and resilience in the face of economic pressure.

During a video message on April 6, Anwar stated that Malaysia, as the current ASEAN chair, will work with countries like Viet Nam and Indonesia to ensure their collective voice is heard and that supply chains remain open and strong.

The U.S. has imposed steep tariffs on several Southeast Asian countries—46% on Viet Nam, 49% on Cambodia, and 24% on Malaysia—prompting Malaysia to reject claims that it imposes a 47% tariff on American goods while still opting for diplomatic engagement over retaliation.

To manage the situation, Malaysia has set up a geo-economic command center and is preparing for negotiations with the U.S., while Anwar reassured citizens that although economic targets may be reviewed, the country will not fall into recession due to these tariffs.
