The ongoing trade tensions between the United States and China escalated further as the U.S. government announced a new 104% tariff on certain Chinese imports, effective from April 9, 2025.

This decision came after China refused to back down from its 34% retaliatory tariffs, prompting President Donald Trump to follow through on his earlier warning of imposing steep punitive measures.

The announcement was made by White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, who confirmed that the new tariff had already gone into effect at noon on April 8 and would begin collection the next day.

This dramatic move is expected to shake global markets, signaling an even more volatile chapter in the economic standoff between the two largest economies in the world.
