Singapore is approaching a major demographic shift, with 20.7% of its citizens aged 65 and above in 2026, up from 13.1% in 2015. According to the National Population and Talent Division’s Population in Brief report, the country is entering “super-aged” status, marking a significant transformation in its population structure.

The ageing trend is accelerating at the highest age brackets. The number of residents aged 80 and above surged nearly 60% over a decade, rising from 91,000 in 2015 to about 145,000 in 2025. This rapid growth highlights mounting pressure on healthcare, housing, and social systems.

Alongside ageing, social isolation among seniors is becoming more visible. Around 87,000 elderly residents were living alone in 2024, a sharp increase from 58,000 in 2018. Data compiled by Loving Heart and Death Kopitiam Singapore recorded at least 33 “lonely deaths” in 2025, where elderly individuals died unnoticed for days or weeks.

Dileep Nair warned that current care models are inadequate, offering limited options between staying at home with minimal support or moving into nursing homes. He emphasized the need for assisted living communities that balance independence, healthcare access, and social interaction.

Ong Ye Kung acknowledged the urgency, highlighting outreach efforts by the Silver Generation Office and community networks. Meanwhile, Shannon Ang stressed that the 60% rise in the oldest population signals a need to scale infrastructure, calling it one of the country’s most significant social transformations.
