Phú Quốc is undertaking one of the most ambitious infrastructure overhauls in Viet Nam as the island prepares to host APEC 2027, beginning with a major expansion of Phu Quoc International Airport to ICAO 4E standards, increasing capacity to 18–20 million passengers a year—4.5 times current levels—through a VND 22,000 billion investment featuring biometric systems, automated baggage handling, and operational guidance from Changi Airport Group.

The An Giang Provincial People’s Committee has also approved construction of Phú Quốc’s first-ever 18 km metro line, including six stations—one underground—built under a VND 9,000 billion public-private partnership and designed to transport more than 4,500 passengers per hour using electric trains operating at 70–100 km/h.

Phase 1 of the metro, scheduled from Q4 2025 to Q2 2027, will link the airport directly to the APEC Conference Center via a route combining elevated, at-grade, and underground segments, ensuring seamless mobility for the 12,000 delegates expected during the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week in November 2027.

Vice Chairman Giang Thanh Khoa highlighted that these landmark projects symbolize Phú Quốc’s deepening international integration and long-term ambition to evolve into a national marine economic hub comparable to Dubai, Singapore, and Doha.

Complementing this transformation, the upcoming APEC Conference Center will feature the world’s largest column-free ballroom at 11,050 square meters—surpassing Las Vegas’s Caesars Forum—and include exclusive entertainment partnerships with Cirque du Soleil, positioning Phú Quốc as a rising Asia-Pacific center for diplomacy, tourism, and economic cooperation beyond 2027.
