Driving Energy Transition: Electric Vehicles at the 43rd ASEAN Summit in Indonesia

Electric vehicles will be the main means of transportation during the 43rd ASEAN Summit in 2023 at the Jakarta Convention Center from September 5 to 7, 2023. The existence of various types of environmentally friendly vehicles is the result of the participation of the automotive industry in Indonesia.

The decision to use electric vehicles as operational transportation for official international events in Indonesia is also a form of support for the Indonesian government's efforts to switch from fossil energy to renewable energy sources.

This is the third time that national automakers have participated in international events such as the 43rd ASEAN Summit in 2023. Previously, they also participated in the 42nd ASEAN Summit 2023 in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai Regency, West Nusa Tenggara on May 9-11, 2023 and the G-20 Summit in Nusa Dua, Bali on November 15-16, 2022.

Four Indonesian automakers, PT BMW Indonesia, PT Hyundai Motors Indonesia (HMID), PT Toyota Astra Motor (TAM), and Wuling Motors, cooperated to provide their four-wheelers as operational fleets for the 43rd ASEAN Summit.

For example, BMW Indonesia handed over 36 units of its latest product, the BMW i7 xDrive60 Grand Lusso, to Secretary of State Pratikno. The handover was made by Jean-Philippe Parain, Senior Vice President Sales Region Asia-Pacific, Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa, in Jakarta on June 6.

All of these vehicles, which can be charged to 80 percent in just 34 minutes, have been placed at the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) Stadium Complex, Senayan, as the main venue for the 43rd ASEAN Summit in 2023.

In addition, 74 units of IONIQ 6 and 272 units of Hyundai IONIQ 5 were loaned by HMID for the 43rd ASEAN Summit 2023. This handover took place on August 11, 2023 in the middle of the 2023 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show in Tangerang, Banten. The IONIQ 6 will be used as the official vehicle of the VVIP delegation pair, while the IONIQ 5 will serve as the protocol, security, rescue and operational vehicle of the National Committee.

Secretary of the Ministry of State Secretariat, Setya Utama, quoted from HMID's press release, expressed his gratitude for the support of the South Korean automaker in the implementation of the ASEAN Summit. Meanwhile, HMID President Director, Woojune Cha, expressed his pride to be part of the implementation of the 43rd ASEAN Summit 2023 and gave his full support to Indonesia's leadership in this ASEAN Summit.

In addition, TAM also loaned 76 units of Toyota Bz4X as official vehicles for high-ranking ministerial-level officials attending the 43rd ASEAN Summit in 2023.

WMI, on the other hand, loaned 150 Wuling AirEv electric cars as operational vehicles. According to Brian Gomgom, Public Relations Manager of Wuling Motors, all units of Wuling's first electric car in Indonesia have a pure white color and special design.

On the right and left doors are the official logos of the 43rd ASEAN Summit 2023 combined with Betawi batik motifs consisting of images of bondol eagles and jasmine with the dominance of orange and dark purple colors that adorn the side of the car. There is also a red and white flag on the front hood. Gomgom explained that the patterned design was inspired by batik as one of the cultural products of the Betawi people, an ethnic group indigenous to Jakarta.
