Thailand Implements Automated Biometric Identification System at Six Airports
Thailand is set to launch an automated biometric identification system based on facial recognition technology at six major airports, providing passengers with a new experience by expediting the travel process.
This innovative system allows travelers to show their physical ID only once during their journey.

Schedule for Facial Recognition Technology Rollout
According to Kirati Kitmanawat, Director of the Airports Authority of Thailand, the system is scheduled to be operational starting November 1, 2024, for domestic flights, and December 1, 2024, for international flights.
This technology is designed to enhance efficiency and passenger comfort, especially amid the rising air traffic in Thailand.

How the Biometric System Works
The process is straightforward—during check-in, whether at the counter or via self-service kiosks, passengers will be asked to grant access to their identification information.
Once biometric data and travel itineraries are electronically recorded, passengers can proceed through the various security stages—from baggage drop to the boarding gate—without needing to present their passports or boarding passes.
Each registration is valid for a single journey, meaning passengers will need to re-register for each new flight.

Airports Adopting the New System
The airports implementing this system include Suvarnabhumi International Airport, Don Mueang International Airport, Chiang Mai International Airport, Mae Fah Luang/Chiang Rai International Airport, Phuket International Airport, and Hat Yai International Airport.
These airports serve as key hubs for passenger movement in Thailand, and the increased efficiency offered by the biometric system is expected to accommodate the ongoing rise in passenger numbers.

Surge in Passenger Traffic and Impact of the New Technology
Kirati also noted that passenger numbers at these airports rose by nearly 20% during September and October 2024 compared to the same period last year.
With this new technology in place, Thailand is poised to handle an even higher influx of passengers in the coming years while ensuring a faster and more seamless experience for travelers.
