On May 26, 2026, Canada simplified its entry requirements for citizens of Indonesia and Malaysia. Eligible travellers from these countries can now apply for a quick Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) instead of a traditional visitor visa when flying to Canada.

Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is a digital travel permit that allows travelers to enter certain countries for tourism, business, or other short-term stays without “traditional” visa.

This major shift makes international travel far more accessible, affordable, and efficient for thousands of people from Indonesia and Malaysia. It also eliminates the need for lengthy paperwork and in-person appointments.

Strengthening Economis and Diplomatic Ties

Canada is actively working to strengthen its economic and diplomatic ties with the Indo-Pacific region. This area remains one of the fastest-growing economic zones in the world.

Indonesia and Malaysia are viewed as important economic partners within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). By expanding visa-free air travel through the eTA program, the Canadian government aims to diversify its trade partners and support a more resilient global economy.

The main goal of this initiative is to improve people-to-people connections and make it much simpler for business visitors to access Canadian markets. Canada hopes that by streamlining international travel, the country can attract top global talent, support innovation, and create new economic opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses alike. This update is a direct component of Canada's broader Indo-Pacific Strategy.

Who Qualifies for an eTA?

It is crucial to understand that the eTA program is not available to every passport holder. To qualify for an eTA instead of a standard visitor visa, travellers must meet two strict requirements:

  • Method of Travel: The entry into Canada must be by air. Anyone planning to enter the country by car, bus, train, or boat (including cruise ships), must still apply for a visitor visa.
  • Travel History: Applicants must either have held a Canadian visitor visa (Temporary Resident Visa) within the past 10 years or currently hold a valid United States non-immigrant visa at the time of application.

These specific travellers are considered "known" to Canada because they have already undergone successful background screenings by either Canadian or U.S. immigration authorities.

Anyone who does not meet these exact conditions must continue to apply for a standard visitor visa. Furthermore, an eTA is strictly for tourism, family visits, or short-term business trips. Separate study or work permits are still required for those specific purposes.

What You Need to Prepare

The official processing fee for an eTA is only CAN$7. However, it is important to note that this cheap fee is completely non-refundable, even if the application is ultimately not approved.

Before starting the official online application form, applicants should have the following items ready to avoid delays:

  1. A valid passport from Indonesia or Malaysia.
  2. A valid email address so the Canadian government can send the final results.
  3. An acceptable digital payment method to cover the CAN$7 fee. The online system accepts several cards, including Visa, Mastercard, and American Express (including pre-paid versions), as well as Visa Debit, Debit Mastercard, UnionPay, or JCB Card.

The Application Process

The application process is completely digital and designed to be user-friendly. However, the online portal does not allow applicants to save their progress, meaning the entire form must be finished in a single session.

  • Gather the passport, payment card, and read any official help documents.
  • Complete the online form. While the application form itself is only available in English and French, helpful instructional guides are provided in many other languages to assist international applicants.
  • After completing the form, pay the CAN$7 fee through the secure portal.
  • The vast majority of applicants will receive an official approval email within just a few minutes.
  • In rare situations, immigration officers might request extra documentation. If this happens, an email with specific instructions will be sent within 72 hours.

Moreover, Canada remains deeply committed to border security. An approved eTA does not automatically guarantee entry into the country. Upon arrival at a Canadian airport, travellers must still undergo standard security screening and admissibility checks by border services officers.

The Canadian government has recently upgraded its screening systems and fraud detection methods to protect the integrity of its immigration system. Furthermore, Canada possesses the legal authority to cancel eTAs, visas, or permits under specific circumstances to ensure public safety. This balanced approach allows for easier entry for legitimate visitors while keeping the borders safe and secure.
