Singapore is one of the modern countries that features buildings with iconic architectural characteristics. One example can be seen in the Marina Bay Sands building, which is iconic for its structure resembling a ship resting atop three hotel towers.
However, there is a building in Singapore whose physical form refers to a fictional vehicle from the Star Wars franchise. The building is known as The Sandcrawler. Its location is situated in the Fusionopolis Tech Park research and development center, within the One-North district.
Taking Inspiration from The Sandcrawler of Star Wars
Taking the same name, the building was inspired by a fictional vehicle named The Sandcrawler. In its cinematic appearances, The Sandcrawler first appeared in the film Star Wars Episode IV – A New Hope (1977).
The Sandcrawler in the film has a giant box-like shape with a sloped front snout. The vehicle is used by the fictional Jawa character group to traverse the desert sands of the planet Tatooine.
The physical form of The Sandcrawler building mirrors the proportions of the vehicle in the film. Rather than using conventional concrete walls, the building features a modern layered glass facade structure.
The architectural design of the building was executed by the Hong Kong-based architectural firm Aedas. Specifically, the design was crafted by Andrew Bromberg from the same firm.
The Sandcrawler building was inaugurated in January 2014. It consists of nine stories with a total floor area of approximately 22,500 square meters.
The structural layout is designed in a horseshoe shape. The central part of the building features a courtyard with a concave, V-shaped open green space. Around the area, there is a statue of Yoda, one of the main characters in the Star Wars films.
The glass facade is constructed with closely spaced vertical patterns. At the rear and center of the exterior area, there are green spaces.
The Sandcrawler Building Function in the Past
Regarding its function, The Sandcrawler building once served as the regional headquarters for Lucasfilm in Southeast Asia. Lucasfilm is widely known as the motion picture company famous for the Star Wars franchise.
Inside the building, it formerly housed the operational offices of the animation studio Lucasfilm Animation Singapore. The studio produced various Star Wars animated series and handled digital visual effects.
Beyond animation, the building also served as an operational base for the Singapore division of Industrial Light and Magic. That studio focused on executing visual effects for Star Wars and other Hollywood films.
Throughout its operational history, the building contributed to the production of major film projects such as Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015), Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019).
In addition to serving as an operational office, The Sandcrawler functioned as a hub for the creative industry and digital technology. The building is equipped with a private theater with a seating capacity of 100 for internal screenings and media testing.
Furthermore, the building was utilized to house branch offices for other entertainment enterprises. The Walt Disney Company Southeast Asia also previously maintained offices within the building.
Aside from Disney, the sports broadcasting company ESPN Asia Pacific also previously used the building as a workspace.
In April 2021, The Sandcrawler building was acquired by the investment firm Blackstone Group. Ownership of the property was purchased from Lucas Real Estate for 176 million Singapore dollars (approximately 132 million US dollars).
Two years later, Lucasfilm decided to close its studio in Singapore in August 2023. The closure of the Singapore studio was motivated by economic factors as part of Lucasfilm's operational adjustment efforts.
Following the closure, The Sandcrawler building no longer functions as an operational base for Lucasfilm. The building now functions as a multi-tenant office building that houses prominent companies such as The Walt Disney Company Southeast Asia.
