The black orchid (Coelogyne pandurata) is an endemic flora native to the island of Borneo. The species was first collected from the Sarawak region in 1852 by the English plant collector Hugh Low. Its official taxonomic description was published a year later by botanist John Lindley in 1853.
In its natural habitat, Coelogyne pandurata grows as an epiphytic plant anchored to the trunks of large trees, particularly in areas adjacent to riverstreams. The black orchid occurs naturally in lowland rainforests to hilly terrain at elevations ranging from 10 to 1,000 meters above sea level.
The Black Orchid Plant Profile
Vegetative growth of the black orchid is supported by a creeping rhizome approximately one centimeter thick. The rhizome gives rise to a series of flattened, green pseudobulbs reaching heights of up to 19 cm in mature specimens. The pseudobulbs store the water and nutrients necessary for the plant's survival.
From the apex of each pseudobulb, exactly two lanceolate leaves extend up to 66 cm in length. The shape and texture of the leaf blades vaguely resemble the leaves of young coconut shoots.
Despite bearing the name black orchid, most of its floral organs are actually dominated by a light green color. The tepals (petals and sepals) are elongated, which measure between 3.2 and 7.5 cm.
The black color appears as an accent on the lip (labellum). Its black portion consists of contrasting speckles and finely pubescent streaks set against a light green background.
The flowers are arranged in an arched to pendulous raceme ranging from 15 to 30 cm in length. A single main inflorescence can bear up to 15 blooms opening simultaneously from newly emerging growth shoots.
The proportions of the floral organs are relatively large. The tepals are elongated, with sizes ranging from 3.2 to 7.5 cm.
When in bloom, the black orchid emits a distinct fragrance with a scent profile resembling a blend of honey and cinnamon. Its peak blooming season generally occurs between March and June.
Despite its striking appearance and fragrance, the blooming duration lasts for only one week. The flowers remain in full bloom for just three to four days.
Visual Contrast with Close Relatives
At first glance, Coelogyne pandurata shows physical similarities to its close relative, Coelogyne rumphii. The distinction between the two becomes clear only upon examining the size and color of the labellum.
Coelogyne pandurata displays larger blooms with deep black patterns on its labellum, whereas Coelogyne rumphii tends to be smaller with a dominance of yellow and brown hues.
In the orchid family, black coloration is rare among wild species. Beyond its rarity, the natural black pigment of Coelogyne pandurata makes it an important parental line for breeding orchid hybrids.
However, wild populations of the black orchid continue to decline due to lowland forest degradation and wild harvesting.
In addition to being designated as the floral emblem of East Kalimantan Province, the Indonesian government has listed the black orchid as a protected flora under Government Regulation No. 7 of 1999.
In Indonesia, wild populations of the black orchid can still be found in the Kersik Luway Nature Reserve in East Kalimantan. In West Kalimantan, the black orchid can be found in the Selimbau Black Orchid Park in Kapuas Hulu Regency.
