The original vision for Genting Highlands came from entrepreneur Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong in the late 1960s. Construction on the difficult mountain access road began in August 1965 to connect the summit. The overall resort officially opened its doors to guests in May 1971.
Construction for First World Hotel specifically launched in 1997, leading to the opening of the first block in 2001. By 2006, the opening of a second tower expanded the property capacity to 6,118 rooms. At that time, the hotel established its initial claim as the largest hotel worldwide.
Although a Las Vegas property briefly took the world title in 2008, Malaysia soon reclaimed the top spot. In 2015, the hotel completed a new Tower 2 Annex, adding 1,233 extra rooms to the complex. This major development brought the official count to the current total of 7,351 operational rooms.
The vast inventory of accommodations is categorized into several distinct room types across three towers. Standard rooms make up 3,164 units, alongside 2,922 luxury rooms and 649 luxury triple rooms. The rest of the inventory includes 480 superior luxury rooms and 136 World Club suites.
