Documented reports from Southeast Asia reveal that falling durians cause more deaths annually than shark attacks worldwide, with researchers from Year of the Durian tracking six durian-related fatalities in 2012 alone across Malaysia, Philippines, and Indonesia.

The International Shark Attack File maintained by the Florida Museum of Natural History reports an average of only 5-6 unprovoked shark attack fatalities globally per year, while durian incidents include deaths from falling fruit, transportation accidents, and overconsumption-related heart attacks.

These spiky "King of Fruits" can weigh up to 8 pounds and fall from trees reaching 150 feet tall, with documented cases including a 1-month-old baby killed by a 4-pound durian in Malaysia and a 68-year-old man crushed when durians fell from his motorcycle basket.

The Australian Institute of Marine Science confirms that approximately 10 people die from shark attacks annually worldwide, compared to 150 deaths from falling coconuts, placing durians among fruits statistically more dangerous than marine predators.

Durian trees' shallow root systems make them particularly susceptible to high winds in typhoon-prone tropical regions, leading to additional fatalities when entire trees collapse onto homes and structures during storms.
