Toyota Astra Motor (TAM), the Japanese automaker's 50:50 joint venture with PT Astra International, announced at the 32nd Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show that it will begin local production of the facelifted bZ4X electric SUV by the end of 2025, marking Toyota's first locally assembled electric vehicle in Indonesia.
The locally-produced bZ4X will help Toyota leverage its commanding market share to aggressively compete against incoming Chinese electric vehicle competition that has been gaining traction in Indonesia's rapidly growing EV market.
Toyota currently dominates Indonesia's automotive market with a 36.4% market share among the top five Japanese automakers controlling 92.4% of the total market, but faces increasing pressure from Chinese brands offering more affordable electric vehicles.
The Indonesian-made bZ4X will be offered exclusively with a front-wheel drive configuration, transitioning from the current imported Japanese model to make the electric SUV more accessible to local consumers.
Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto acknowledged that Chinese EVs entering the market with affordable prices are expected to increase competition, as EV penetration in Indonesia continues to see significant growth with Chinese brands leading the charge.
