A rare durian of the Kanyao variety has sold for a whopping 1.5 million baht (about $48,000) at an auction in Thailand, making it one of the most expensive durians ever sold.
The lavish auction featured premium durian varieties such as Monthong, Kanyao and Kop Med Tao, each fetching more than 300,000 baht, with the total proceeds of 4.5 million baht going to local farmers and charities.
Maliwan Han Chai Thai, the owner of the orchard that grew the expensive durian, said he was surprised but pleased by the price, which far exceeded his expectations, and hoped buyers would enjoy the deliciousness of what he considers to be the best durian in the world.
The auction not only reflects the public's love for high-quality durian, but also shows how this exotic fruit can be a symbol of luxury and bring economic benefits to local farmers.
