French President Emmanuel Macron announced a "historic" aviation deal between Airbus and Malaysia during his hosting of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Paris on Friday, marking a significant milestone in France–Malaysia bilateral relations.
The comprehensive agreement includes Malaysia Airlines ordering 20 additional Airbus A330neo widebody aircraft valued at approximately US$7.5 billion at list prices, building upon their existing fleet modernization program that began with an initial 20 A330neo order.
AirAsia separately secured a memorandum of understanding with Airbus for up to 70 A321XLR extended-range single-aisle jets, with 50 firm orders and options for 20 more aircraft, potentially reaching US$12.3 billion in total value.
According to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, these deals collectively represent approximately US$20 billion in aircraft purchases and will strengthen Malaysia's position as Asia's leading aviation hub while enhancing both airlines' operational capabilities for short, medium, and long-haul routes.
President Macron emphasized that such agreements highlight the critical importance of France-Asia trade relationships, particularly as Europe navigates potential trade challenges amid concerns over protectionist policies from other global powers.
