Indonesia has officially launched the ambitious US$20 billion Bali Metro project, a massive urban transit development aimed at revolutionizing travel on the island and easing long-standing issues caused by traffic congestion and over-tourism in key areas like Denpasar, Kuta, and Ubud.

The Bali Metro—set to include underground and elevated rail lines—is designed not only to improve daily mobility for locals and tourists alike but also to promote more sustainable transportation, reduce carbon emissions, and protect the island’s fragile environment.

With construction expected to span several years, the project reflects Indonesia’s broader push to modernize infrastructure and create a more balanced tourism experience, especially in response to growing concerns about overcrowding and the impact of mass tourism on local communities.

Once completed, the metro system is expected to become a game-changer for Bali’s economy and urban landscape, offering a more efficient, eco-friendly way to explore the island while preserving its cultural and natural charm.
